Disc decompression, also known as spinal decompression is a therapy that is used to remove pressure from nerve roots in the back, neck, or leg. The therapy involves gently stretching the spine by using a traction table, or motorized device.

The aim of disc decompression is to relieve back, neck, arm or leg pain. Anyone with back, neck, arm, or leg pain that is caused by damaged or degenerated disc may find relief from disc decompression.

During a disc decompression, motorized traction is used to gently stretch the spine in order to change the force and position of the spine. You can decompress your spine at home by performing the following exercises:

  • Overhead stretch

This exercise can help you decompress your back.

To do the overhead stretch: Stand up straight on your feet and raise your arms straight up with your elbows straight. Point your fingers towards the ceiling and stay in this position for 30 seconds before releasing yourself. Repeat this routine 3 or more times.

  • Cat stretch

This exercise helps to increase circulation in your spine and strengthen the muscles surrounding your spine.

To do the cat stretch: Kneel down on your knees and place your two hands on the floor just like a cat. Slowly bend your back and drop down your head in between your arms and then breathe deeply. Slowly take your stomach and back inward toward the floor and breathe out. Tilt your head and pelvis upward and remain in this position for 30 seconds before releasing yourself.

  • Child’s pose

This exercise is very effective for back decompression

To do this exercise: Place the tops of your feet on the floor and slowly sit on your heels like a child. Spread your knees slightly wider than your torso and lay your torso down in between your knees while you bend your lower back. Straighten out your arms over your head and place your palms on the floor while still bending. Remain in this position for 30 seconds and then take both hands to the right-hand side. Remain in this position for 30 seconds and then take your both hands to the left side. Hold for 30 seconds and then release.

  • Hanging

Hanging may be beneficial for you if you sit most for prolonged period of time or you have a sore back.

To do this exercise: Hang on a crossbar with your arms straight and hold to the crossbar for 30 seconds to a minute and then release. Do this routine as many times as you can.
