Platelet Rich Plasma, Conditions, Mansfield TX

The blood is a liquid (plasma) that contains white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets.

The platelets help to clot blood in case of an injury. It prevents excessive bleeding and loss of blood by clotting an injured skin or a cut.

It also helps to increase the healing process of a wound or an injury due to its high protein contents.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a therapy or a procedure that is done to increase the platelet content or concentration of platelets to enhance and increase blood clot and healing of wounds.

The procedure increases the platelet content by 5 to 10 times more than the normal platelet content in the blood.

Who needs platelet-rich plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma therapy is done for different kinds of conditions. Patients with the conditions below may need the therapy:

  • Tendon injuries – Tendons are tough, thick tissues that connect muscle with the bone. They are commonly found around the ankle, knee, and elbow. When injured, they are slow to heal. PRP injections can be used to increase the healing rate of an injured tendon.
  • Acute injuries – Acute injuries sustained from sporting activities or accidents may require the use of PRP to increase their healing process. Most athletes with one injury or the other use PRP to increase their healing rate.
  • Hair loss – The protein-rich content of a PRP enhances hair growth. People with bald hair or hair loss may be required to undergo PRP therapy for hair growth.
  • Post-surgical repair – After a surgical procedure, blood clot and healing may become difficult. The use of PRP helps to enhance blood clot and healing process.
  • Osteoarthritis – People with knee problems such as osteoarthritis may find PRP very helpful.

How is PRP therapy done?

A PRP may be done during a surgical procedure or a wound healing procedure.

Your doctor may first inject a numbing agent to numb the area where the injection will be given. This is to reduce pain and make you feel more comfortable.

An amount of blood will be drawn from your body.

The blood will be placed in a centrifuge and spun to separate the blood contents. The platelets will be separated from the other blood cells.

Your doctor will then use ultrasound imaging guidance to detect the exact areas for the injection.

When the targeted area has been confirmed, the platelet-rich blood will be injected into the area.

The process takes about 30-60 minutes to be completed.

After the PRP has been injected

After the PRP has been administered, you may notice an immediate difference in the affected area.

You can go back home after the injection has been given but if you undergo a surgical procedure, you may need to stay back at the hospital depending on your doctor’s recommendation.

You may be required to rest for some hours.

You can continue your normal daily activities.

You will observe that the affected area that was injected is healing faster after several weeks or months.

If the PRP injection was hair growth, you will experience increased hair growth.

Side effects or complications of PRP injection

PRP injection involves injecting your own platelets back into your body. The procedure is entirely a safe procedure and there are no adverse side effects.

PRP reduces the need for oral medications such as opioids and other medications for wounds or injuries.

The risk of allergic reactions is also greatly reduced since you are being injected by your own platelets.

However, there are some minor issues that may occur. These include:

  • Pain in the injection site.
  • Bleeding
  • Irritation
  • Tissue damage
  • Nerve injuries
